Emotional Equity

What is Emotional Equity?

Emotional Equity prevents negative, gender-specific judgments about emotional expression through an actionable model

Dr Sarah Whyte, 2020

How did the concept of emotional equity come about?

As a speaker on the Keynote Women’s Speaker’s Directory, I was keen to speak at their Equity in Action event for International Women’s Day in March 2020. All speakers were tasked to share a TEDx-style talk giving their perspective on equity. This meant shifting the focus from equality, which means giving everyone an equal opportunity, to equity, or giving everyone what they need to succeed.

My doctorate focused on emotional intelligence, plus I planned units of work for my primary students to raise their awareness of gender stereotypes. I saw a great opportunity to combine both areas into a brand new topic: emotional equity.

Of course, events with the COVID-19 pandemic very quickly put a stop to any large gatherings in Singapore at that time. The Equity in Action event has been postponed to October 2020 instead. However, creating my keynote on Emotional Equity proved to be an exciting new topic for me, and one I am planning to explore more based on the highly positive feedback I’ve received so far.

Working toward Emotional Equity: the actionable three C model

With my model of Emotional Equity, I wanted to move beyond a theoretical concept to a practical model with clear steps, allowing people to successfully put the Emotional Equity model into action at work.

To move towards Emotional Equity in the workplace, I recommend that people follow what I call the 3Cs:

  1. Compassion

  2. Curiosity

  3. Communication

How can you support your workplace in moving toward emotional equity?

Take a look at my speaker sheet for more information about my Emotional Equity keynote. I also offer interactive and engaging online webinars where participants discover more detail about the 3Cs of Emotional Equity. My webinars range from a half-day, in-depth workshop to a one-hour introduction to the key concepts. I will be resuming in-person workshops once it’s safe for people to be in groups once again. Please get in touch if you’re keen to know more about an online webinar for your organisation as part of your D&I program.
